Why Is My Camry Burning Oil?

Summary: If you have a 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 or 2011 Toyota Camry with the 2.4-liter engine (the well-known 2AZ-FE) and you notice you have to add oil between changes, you are not imagining things: it is a well-known problem with that engine. In many cases the car does not drip oil on the ground; it burns it internally, and it can go through as much as one quart of oil every 1,000 miles. The good news is that if you catch it in time and keep the level correct, the engine can keep working for a long time.

01Signs it is happening to you

  • The dipstick reads low every time you check, even though there are no oil stains on the ground.
  • You have to top off the oil once or twice between each change.
  • A little bluish smoke comes out of the exhaust on a cold start.
  • The oil pressure warning light comes on, especially in turns or when braking (this already signals a very low level).
  • The engine sounds rougher than normal or knocks.

02Why does it happen?

In that engine, the piston rings tend to stick with age and mileage. The rings are what seal the piston against the cylinder; when they stick or wear out, oil passes into the combustion chamber and is burned along with the gasoline. That is why you do not see puddles: the oil disappears out the exhaust. A clogged PCV valve can also contribute, increasing the pressure inside the engine and pushing oil where it should not go. It is not carelessness on your part: it happened to a great many Camrys from those years, even with their maintenance up to date.

03What happens if you ignore it?

Oil is the engine's lifeblood. If the level drops too low, the internal parts are left without lubrication, they overheat and wear speeds up. The result can be a seized engine, and at that point the repair is major: rebuilding or replacing the entire engine. In addition, burning oil damages the catalytic converter over time, which is another costly repair and can keep the car from passing Maryland's emissions test (VEIP).

04When should you go to the shop?

If you are adding more than one quart of oil every 1,000 miles, if you saw the oil light come on even once, or if blue smoke comes out of the exhaust, it is time to have it checked. At the shop we can confirm whether the consumption is internal, check the PCV valve, look for hidden external leaks and tell you honestly whether the engine can keep working with level monitoring or whether it already needs internal repair.

In the meantime, the most important advice: check the level with the dipstick every time you fill up with gas and never let it drop below the minimum.
