Why Is My Car's Coolant Going Down?
Summary: Your car's cooling system is a closed circuit: coolant does not get "used up" like oil. If the reservoir level goes down, there is a leak somewhere, however small, or the fluid is escaping as vapor through a cap that no longer seals. In cars 10 to 15 years old like the Camrys, Accords, Civics and CR-Vs we see every day, the hoses, the radiator and the water pump already have years of heat behind them, and sooner or later one of them starts to weep. Finding where it is coming from is half the repair.

01Signs it is happening to you
- The overflow reservoir is below the minimum in the morning and you have to refill it often.
- A green, pink or orange stain under the car, almost always toward the front.
- A sweet smell when you get out of the car with the engine hot.
- The temperature needle rises more than usual, even if it later comes down.
- Small puddles or dried, crusty residue around hoses, clamps or the radiator.
- The heater stops heating well in winter (an early symptom of a low level).
02Why does it happen?
The most common causes are these: hoses that dry out and crack over the years; the radiator, whose plastic tanks crack with heat cycles; the water pump, which has a warning opening ("weep hole") where it starts to drip when its internal seal wears out; the radiator or reservoir cap, which, when it loses pressure, lets vapor escape and lowers the boiling point; and the thermostat or its housing. Internal leaks must also be mentioned: if coolant is passing inside the engine through the head gasket, there may not be a single drop on the ground, but the exhaust puts out white smoke and the oil can look creamy. That is the most serious cause and another reason not to ignore a constant drop.
03What happens if you ignore it?
Without enough coolant, the engine overheats, and overheating is one of the most destructive things for an engine: it can warp the cylinder head, damage the gasket and, in extreme cases, seize the engine. In addition, a small leak grows with pressure and heat; what is a drip today can turn into a burst hose in the middle of the highway, with all the coolant lost in minutes.
04When should you go to the shop?
If you refill the reservoir more than once a month, if you ever saw the needle rise above halfway, or if there are new stains where you park, come have it checked. At the shop we do a pressure test of the system: with the engine cold we pump in pressure and the leak shows up even if it is minimal, and we also check the condition of the hoses, radiator and water pump to give you a complete diagnosis.
