Why Is My RAV4 Making a Noise in the Back?

Summary: If your 2013 to 2018 Toyota RAV4 with all-wheel drive (AWD) makes a hum, growl or bad-tire-like noise coming from the back, the problem is very likely in the rear differential coupling. It is a known failure in those generations: that part is what engages the rear axle when the computer detects that the front wheels are slipping. When the coupling's internal bearing wears out, it starts making noise long before it stops working.

01Signs it is happening to you

  • A hum or growl that comes from the rear and is heard most between 30 and 50 miles per hour.
  • The noise changes or increases when you accelerate and drops when you let off the gas.
  • Sometimes a slight vibration is felt in the floor of the car.
  • The noise continues even though you have replaced the tires or they are in good condition.
  • In some cases you also notice that the RAV4 uses oil between changes; that is a separate issue, known in the 2006 to 2010 and 2015 to 2017 engines, that is worth checking at the same time.

02Why does it happen?

The rear coupling works with an electromagnetic clutch and a sealed bearing. Over the years, with heat and mileage, that bearing loses its internal grease and starts to make noise. The condition of the rear differential fluid also plays a role: if it has never been changed, wear speeds up. It is not that you drove badly; it is typical wear of the part in those RAV4s. Note: a noise in the back can also come from a damaged wheel bearing or from tires with uneven wear, which is why it has to be diagnosed before replacing parts.

03What happens if you ignore it?

The noise will keep getting louder. If the coupling fails completely, the SUV is left working with front-wheel drive only, which you notice on wet roads or in snow here in Maryland, and the damage can spread to the rear differential, making the repair more expensive. In addition, driving for months with a damaged bearing generates more heat and wear across the whole rear assembly.

04When should you go to the shop?

As soon as the noise is constant and repeats at the same speeds, come have it checked. At the shop we lift the SUV, use diagnostic equipment to listen for exactly where the noise starts — coupling, wheel bearing or tires — and tell you the truth about which part it is and what condition it is in, so you do not spend money on the wrong thing.
